Award Title:  The Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma: Sex Offender Public Notification Project

Award Description:

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA) authorizes the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) to administer grants to assist states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and tribal jurisdictions in developing and/or enhancing sex offender registration and notification programs that support substantial implementation of Title I of the AWA, the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA was enacted to protect the public from convicted sex offenders and offenders against children by establishing a comprehensive national system for the registration of those offenders. The goals of this project are to provide the Multi-Agency Sex Offender Response Team with updated equipment necessary to continue to track, identify and register noncompliant and absconded offenders; educate and increase public awareness of the SORNA program and provide access to sex offender information for tribal members and the public at large; and move to a new web-accessible crime reporting software, enhancing interoperability between the tribe’s SORNA program and all police departments assisting the Sex Offender Response Team. ca/ncf
